Format:
Scientific article
Target population:
Children and adolescents
Objetive:

To evaluate the physical activity and social interaction of children in playgrounds, at individual level.

Methodology:

First, a series of target study individuals are defined, based on gender, age or weight.

During the observation, a “target” individual is selected for observation who is representative of the selected study population and observed in successive ten-second periods.

In each ten-second period, their activity level, size of the social group they are part of, type of activity, and social interactions are recorded.

Opportunities and limitations:

The tool has been tested and validated through pilot studies in UK schools. It is an appropriate tool to assess physical activity in children, which by nature is spontaneous and transient.

Indicators:
Number of children in the playground.
Elements that the playground has (e.g. swings, basketball hoops, etc.).
Level of involvement of teachers in the activities of the playground.
Weekly physical activity level of children and adolescents.
Access to healthy, varied and affordable food.
