Tanners neighborhood and El Rec
There is documentary evidence of the existence of a rudimentary canal or ditch that channelled water from the Anoia River to the Abadia mill as far back as the 12th century.
In the 18th century, the tanners of Igualada abandoned the enclosure within the mediaeval walls and settled near the canal. The tannery district gradually formed around it, with the characteristic buttresses attached to the façades of the tanneries. It is the part of the city with the greatest sense of identity and the only industrial landscape in Catalonia dedicated to leather tanning.
The El Rec neighbourhood is home to the Igualada Leather Museum, comprised of an old textile factory (Cal Boyer) and a 17th-century tannery (Cal Granotes).
