The Barcelona City Council gets ready to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals
The Councillor for International Relations of the City of Barcelona, Laura Pérez, presented last Friday in the plenary session of the Municipal Council the report on the progress of the City Council in fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
According to Pérez, the SDGs "link very well with the organizational culture of the Barcelona City Council, based on its strategic thinking and on the integral approach to problems, participation and innovation".
In the report presented by the Councillor, five key elements have been identified in the process of "localisation" of the SDGs by the City Council, these being:
- An organic structure, based on the creation of a unipersonal political organ (Commissioner of the 2030 Agenda), a collegial body with the presence of various groups of the municipality (Informative Commission) and finally a cross-sectional Commission with representatives from all the different areas of the City Council.
- The alignment of municipal policies, taking into account the 2030 Agenda in the process of designing action programs and ensuring that municipal action is coherent and sufficient to move towards the SDGs.
- Monitoring and accountability, through specific reports based on a system of indicators that will be presented at the municipal plenary session, to the participatory bodies and to the public opinion, with an annual periodicity at least.
- The promotion of social involvement and citizen participation, through school, culture, the media, processes and spaces for citizen participation and alliances between the public sector, the private sector and the associative sector.
- Municipal leadership, exercising legitimate pressure on the Government of the Generalitat, the Central Government and the European Commission.
