This tool provides information on the activities that people carry out in a specific public space. It can be used to record the profile of these people in terms of their age, gender or other relevant aspects.
- Methodology:
-
Observation technique that consists of the observer going through the study area once every hour, marking where people spend time, how many people are in the space and what they are doing.
It records people who are stationary (not moving) and distinguishes between postures (standing, sitting and lying down) and activities (waiting for transport, consuming food and drink, commercial activity, conversation and play).
The age or gender of each registrant can be entered to determine whether the space is inclusive, welcoming, and accessible to all people.
People and activities are counted using a template in which space is provided to write down additional observations on notable aspects or events.
- Opportunities and limitations:
-
This tool provides information on the use of public space and urban furniture. It could help to identify needs in terms of space design, furniture and infrastructure, which can be directed at specific profiles that have been identified as groups with a greater need for inclusion or attention.
The tool does not record people in movement, so the “snapshot” of the public space is partial.
These are observational data that will not always accurately reflect aspects such as the age group or gender of the people.
- Indicators:
-
Number of people who are in the space standing/sitting/lying down. Number of people who are seated on public/private/commercial seats. Number of people waiting for public transport/consuming food or drink/doing commercial activities/talking/doing a cultural activity/playing/exercising.
