Format:
Guide
Target population:
General population
Objetive:

Increase levels of physical activity associated with mobility, make cycling and walking the natural choices for short trips or as part of a longer trip.

Methodology:

This guide presents a series of guidelines and criteria for the design of infrastructure linked to the use of bicycles.

It covers multiple facets of bicycle use in urban environments, with diagrams, desirable threshold data and photographs showing examples of real situations.

It provides ideas and good practices on the integration of infrastructure and bicycle use in new developments, close to other modes of transport, and aspects related to signage and maintenance.

Opportunities and limitations:

It is a complete, very detailed guide on relevant aspects of the use and promotion of the bicycle in urban environments.

It is focused on design criteria and does not address other facets that are more closely related to the social perceptions and changes in habits of the population in this regard.

It supports the design and implementation of strategies, but not the subsequent evaluation phase.

Indicators:
Speed of motorised traffic on sections of shared carriageway.
Volume of car traffic on sections of shared carriageway, expressed as vehicles per rush hour.
Delay in crossings.
Speed limit on roads.
Connectivity with other modes of transport.
Horizontal separation (m) between cycle lane and motorised traffic lane.
