Doce criterios of calidad. Public Life Tools

Gehl Institute
Format:
Guide
Target population:
General population
Objetive:

Evaluate whether elements of public space contribute to a sense of safety/security, comfort and enjoyment.

Methodology:

The tool consists of a questionnaire to be completed by on-site observers. While they are physically in the study space, the observers rate as positive, negative or neutral a series of questions on three main themes: protection/safety, comfort and enjoyment.

Opportunities and limitations:

This is a subjective assessment by the observer, so it cannot be compared quantitatively with questionnaires administered on different spaces.

Its flexibility and adaptability means that the questions on the three main themes (protection/safety, comfort and enjoyment) can be applied in other complementary techniques such as on-site walks, interviews or discussion groups with the local population.

Indicators:
Can you ride a bike and walk without fear of being hit by a driver?
Does the lighting provide a sense of security and a pleasant atmosphere at night?
Do you have attractive seating elements like benches or chairs?
Can you talk in this space?
Do public space and surrounding buildings have a human scale?
